Why do people seek RDP/VPS?

It’s been a long time since I made my last post, So I wrote this important post today. As you may ask yourself, why do people seek VPS (virtual private server) or RDP (remote desktop connection) instead of using their own laptop or PC to run untrusted apps?

In this tutorial, I’ll explain why these VPS and RDP servers are important when dealing with untrusted or patched apps. These servers can also host personal websites to make it available to the public.

Now, what is RDP anyway?

RDP extends “Remote Desktop Protocol”. It is owned by Microsoft, and it is one way we can run several security tasks remotely without involving our own laptop or PC. RDP helps us deploy or test an application which has a virus that can cause critical attacks to our PC. That’s one of the major reasons people use RDP.

RDP is a remote desktop computer or server with a GUI (graphical user interface). Users can access RDP servers only if they have full authentication to the server and have an internet connection. RDP/VPS can be found on windows PC, MacOS and Linux as well just to mention a few.

Difference between RDP and VPS?

There is no big difference between RDP and VPS. RDP is shared with many users, which is, many computers can connect to a single RDP at a time. On the other hand, VPS is limited to an individual with an admin access. In our case, both will just work fine, depending on what you’ll be using it for, both comes with advantage and disadvantages.

Why do people seek RDP/VPS?

Here are some reasons people prefer to do certain tasks mentioned above using RDP/VPS rather than local PC or laptop.

1. It is much faster.

RDP/VPS offer greater PC specs which is very good for most automated tasks. They carry features like faster multi-threading great number of cpu cores which makes tasks faster than our own laptops and PCs.

2. More Secure

This means anything you’re doing on the server is exclusive to your PC environment, whether you’re deploying an application or using infected files, there’s no way it can affect your PC. This is because you’re doing your tasks on PC which is elsewhere and not you own.

Apps which might contain virus can steal your data like credit card info and login credentials which are sent to the attacker (the developer of the virus or anyone using it)

How I got to know all this? I’m talking from personal experience and will detail it another time in another post.

3. Durability

Unlike our personal computers, RDP/VPS never sleeps. It’s powered day-in-day-out which gives us the advantage of running tasks that take a long time to complete. For instance, if you’re automating a script which takes a long time to complete, RDP/VPS is the best.

4.Final thoughts

If you have a budget for RDP or VPS, go for it. It will not only save your time or power consumption, but it will also speed up your automated tasks. RDP/VPS can be expensive for some of us. But a few websites like amazon and Microsoft (to mention a few) give free RDP/VPS, which is good for testing. You can always do a little search for more RDP/VPS websites.
